A Day in History - 13th May 2012
Heading into the final game of the 2011/12 season, the race for the Premier League title was the closest it had been for a long year. Manchester City topper the standings on 86 points with city rivals Manchester United 8 behind on goal difference. Essentially, Roberto Mancini and his City players knew that if they won, they would be crowned champions.
The Blues had the advantage of playing on their home turf, yet faced a relegation-threatened QPR, who could confirm their Premier League status with a single point at the Etihad. Manchester United, albeit away from home, played a Sunderland side in 12th, who would merely be 'playing out the season'. At 3pm, a simultaneous chorus of referees whistles echoed around the grounds as play commenced.
After a quiet opening quarter of an hour, the red side of Manchester strike first. Wayne Rooney tucking in at the back post to score his 27th goal of the season and briefly taking United top of the table. Approaching halftime, City hit back from an unlikely source, veteran defender Pablo Zabaleta scoring his only goal of the season. At half-time, with City ahead in their game and the league table, all they were required to do now was keep their lead through the second half to win the title.
Just 3 minutes into the second half, Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott gifts QPR a goal, handing the advantage back to Manchester United. City further capitulate, as after QPR's Joey Barton was sent off for assault, Jamie Mackie heads in to put the Londoners ahead against all the odds. City 1, QPR 2 and their first league title hopes are on the brink. Manchester City remain behind at the end of regulation time despite a stream of chances. Five minutes are added on.
Hope is rekindled in the 91st minute as Bosnian striker Edin Džeko powers in a header from City's 18th corner of the match. City are still alive as Martin Tyler comments that it's "finished at Sunderland, Manchester United have done all they can". A 1-0 will be enough if City are unable to find a winner.
Tyler's commentary immortalises the events as the clock hits the 93rd minute of extra time. City push forward as the ball makes its way to Mario Balotelli, who slots it through to Sergio Aguero. You can hear the ball hitting the back of the net as the crowd erupts. Delirium. Tyler screams " I swear you'll never see anything like this ever again. So watch it, drink it in.' He's right, no Premier League moment will live forever in memory more than that final five minutes.
And for Manchester City, the title was theirs.
